1. What’s a hybrid bike?

Before choosing the type of hybrid bike that’s right for you, you should get to know the ins and outs of hybrid bikes. Often seen as a blend of a road and mountain bike, hybrid bikes have their own characteristics.

Geometry

The geometry of hybrid bikes centres on comfort. With a higher head tube and handlebars and a shorter top tube than on a road bike, hybrid bikes are easier to ride. The flat handlebars are also a key aspect and help make you feel confident when steering. The gear shifters and brake levers are easily accessible. All this puts you in a more upright posture, which enhances your comfort when you’re out riding.

Tires

Hybrid bikes have wider tires than a road bike for better grip on the road, which provides better control in variable conditions. They are more versatile on varied terrain. And since they’re wider, they provide extra comfort on bumpy surfaces.

Frame

Several types of frames are available for hybrid bikes. The three most frequently used materials are steel, aluminum and carbon. Here are the particularities of each:

Steel
    • Excellent shock absorption
    • Durable
    • Heavier
    • Poorer energy transfer
Aluminum
    • Lightweight
    • Affordable price
    • Stiffer than steel for better energy transfer
    • A less comfortable ride
    • Potentially damaged faster than steel
Carbon
    • Lightest of the three materials
    • Better responsiveness
    • Enhanced comfort
    • More expensive
    • Not as easily compatible with accessories

You should also consider other components. As for the cassette, your choice greatly depends on how you are going to use the bike. If you plan on using your hybrid bike to get to work, choose a lighter cassette. However, if you’ll be riding in a hilly area, a cassette with many speeds will make the climbs easier. If you would like more information, we recommend meeting with one of our specialists in our stores in Laval and Brossard.

The brakes are mainly V-brakes. However, more expensive models are equipped with hydraulic brakes, which are more responsive in variable conditions.

2. Types of Hybrid Bikes

Under the umbrella of the hybrid bike family, there are four main categories: comfort hybrid bikes, performance hybrid bikes, urban hybrid bikes and electric hybrid bikes. The choice depends on the use you will make of it. By answering the following questions, you will have a better idea of which one to choose:

  • On what surface are you going to ride the bike?
  • How often will you use your bike?
  • How will you use the bike?
  • Do you want to add accessories?

Comfort hybrid bikes

Comfort hybrid bikes are a great choice to go get some ice cream after dinner or just get from point A to point B. They have higher handlebars and padded saddles. They sometimes come with suspension on the front fork, which enhances shock absorption for a smoother ride. Comfort hybrid bikes also offer the possibility of adding accessories, such as fenders and panniers.

Performance hybrid bikes

Ideal for fitness, performance hybrid bikes have similar features as road bikes. You ride in a more forward position, which makes your pedal strokes more efficient. They have a better drivetrain that makes gear shifting easier. They are mainly made of aluminum or carbon for a lighter weight than steel. Lighter than the comfort and urban models, the performance hybrid bike is ideal for a workout or if you just want to travel efficiently.

Urban hybrid bikes

If you’re looking for a bike that makes it easier for you to get around the city, whether it’s to get to work or meet up with friends at the park, an urban hybrid bike is the best option. The more upright position on an urban hybrid bike helps you see traffic. They have wide handlebars and allow you to install the accessories you need for your daily outings. As the name suggests, they are designed for the city and therefore have fewer speeds than a performance bike.

Hybrid electric bikes

Do you want to travel with ease during your daily commute or long weekend excursions? You’ll find what you’re looking for with an electric hybrid bike. As the type of bike indicates, they have an electric assist that makes pedalling into the wind or up a steep hill easier. With the added comfort of a padded saddle and high, flat handlebars, hybrid electric bikes simplify your travels. In addition, some models are equipped with accessories, such as panniers or fenders, or offer the possibility of installing them. Electric bikes are a great environmentally friendly option for replacing a car for small errands and enjoying the outdoors.

The choice of your new hybrid bike is mainly based on the rides you are planning. Whether it’s for an outing with friends, getting back in shape or making your daily travels easier, hybrid bikes are a popular choice that offers versatility and comfort.
