What is a hybrid bike?
Hybrid bikes aren’t quite road bikes or mountain bikes; they do a bit of everything. Whether you’re commuting, running errands, staying active, or just exploring your neighbourhood, a hybrid bike will be your trusty companion. With a flat handlebar, upright riding position, 700c wheels, and wider tires than a road bike (typically between 30 mm and 40 mm), they prioritize comfort and stability without giving up too much speed. Some hybrid bikes come with front suspension to absorb vibrations from rough roads and bumpy paths. Most models feature disc brakes and a simple, intuitive drivetrain. Some frames are compatible with fenders, a rear rack, and panniers.
Where can you ride a hybrid bike?
Designed for comfort and practicality, hybrid bikes are perfect for daily commutes, rides on bike paths, bumpy city streets, or getting some cardio. Their upright riding position helps you see traffic and makes you more visible to others. Add the wide, stable tires, and you’ve got a safe, comfortable bike for riding pavement or well-maintained gravel roads and paths.
How to choose a hybrid bike?
The right bike depends on your needs and where you ride. If you’ll be going on rough roads or forest paths, look for a model with wider tires and, if needed, front suspension for added comfort. Planning to use your bike for errands or commuting? Make sure it’s compatible with racks, fenders, and panniers. Many brands also offer women-specific geometries with a shorter frame and lower top tube. That said, many women opt for standard models. The key is choosing a bike that’s the right size.
What is the difference between a hybrid and gravel bike?
At first glance, these two types of bikes look similar with their wide tires, disc brakes, and comfortable riding position. But their design and purpose are quite different.
Hybrid bikes are all about simplicity and comfort for daily commutes, bike path rides, and getting around town. They typically feature a flat handlebar, simple gearing, and 30 mm to 40 mm tires designed for stability.
Gravel bikes are more performance oriented and better suited to long rides on forest roads and trails. They usually feature a flared drop handlebar, wider tires (38 mm to 50 mm or more), and a wide range of gears for climbing, riding fast, or carrying equipment for bikepacking. They also tend to cost more due to higher-end, specialized components.
Why choose an electric hybrid bike?
An electric hybrid bike makes every ride more accessible and fun, whatever motivates you to hop on the saddle. Pedal assistance flattens hills and lets you go farther with less effort. At Oberson, you’ll find a wide range of models, including Opus, Specialized, Devinci, and more. Our workshops also offer full-service maintenance for electric bikes at both our Laval and Brossard locations.
