You’ve probably already noticed the MIPS technology logo – the yellow dot –behind ski and biking helmets. Created in 2001 by a team of five neuroscience experts, MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is now used by more than 100 helmet manufacturers in specific fields, from construction to outdoor sports. This technology provides increased brain protection during certain types of head impacts.
In fact, during a fall while skiing or biking, the body hits the ground more frequently in an angled rather than a linear position. That type of impact causes a rotational motion that can lead to serious brain injuries such as concussions. The MIPS technology is developed to reduce those types of brain movements and therefore reduce the rotational force that creates stress on the brain tissues.
Rotational Motion Protection
The MIPS protection system reduces rotational motion by allowing the head to move inside the helmet. After more than 30,000 validated and confirmed tests, the conclusion is clear, this head mobility – from 10 to 15 millimeters – reduces the rotational force and strengthens protection on certain types of impact.
In the helmet’s design, the brain protection system is usually found between the padding and the protective foam (EPS). This low friction layer is usually visible due to its yellow color.
You need a new helmet for this summer? Look for the yellow logo and repeat the MIPS mantra: “you only have one brain, protect it!”
