1. Choosing the Right Ski Socks
There are various brands and sock models. However, heated socks all have the same purpose: to moderate your feet’s temperature without moisture buildup. Heated socks diffuse heat to certain target areas—namely, the sole and toes, depending on the model. It’s important to understand that heated socks moderate temperature without overheating. They envelop your feet with a comfortable warmth that also activates blood circulation.
Manufacturers of heated clothing offer men’s, women’s and unisex models. In addition, check the fit and composition of heated socks, which is usually a combination of natural materials, such as merino wool, and synthetic fibres for moisture management. Some models will be narrower, longer or more cushioned. The location of the battery and wiring varies. Make sure they fit your ski or snowboard boots.
2. Heated Sock Batteries
Heated ski socks work thanks to rechargeable batteries, which are connected to a cable located in a small pouch integrated into the heated sock. Most heated socks are sold without them. It’s important to buy batteries that are compatible with the socks you choose. In addition, you can purchase a more powerful battery for certain brands of heated socks to enjoy the heat they diffuse for longer.
Recharging Heated Ski Socks
You can charge sock batteries using a USB cable. We recommend a 110 V power supply to maintain battery life.
Battery Life of Heated Socks
Keep in mind that heated ski sock batteries last between three and eight hours, depending on how you use them and the temperature outside. Set to the first position, you can enjoy the heated product for many hours. However, batteries set to position two and three lose their charge faster. This is also the case on very cold days. That’s why you should start using your heated gear at the minimum temperature before raising it to a higher level. That way, you’re sure to stay warm and comfortable throughout the activity.
What is the lifespan of heated ski sock batteries?
The lifespan of heated sock batteries is closely related to their upkeep. Our recommendations?
- Never leave a battery completely discharged for a long time.
- If the battery isn’t used for several months (in summer for example), complete a charging cycle and discharge it at least once.
- Put a reminder on your schedule to remember to complete this cycle.
3. How to use heated socks?
Heated socks can be used for all your outdoor activities—even for frigid nights of winter camping! They’re easy to use. Wear them directly against your skin. The heat emitted can be adjusted using an app on your phone or directly on your heated socks’ batteries.
Heated socks usually provide three heat levels. The first position is preferable. It warms you up to near the normal body temperature while repelling moisture and keeping your feet comfy. For colder days and less active moments, the battery intensity can be adjusted to the second and third levels for more heat. In those positions, however, be careful of the vicious circle between humidity and heat. When you overheat, you sweat, which generates moisture. A wet garment loses much more heat than a dry one, so you’ll be cold despite the products’ effectiveness.
4. Can you wash heated ski socks?
Heated socks can be washed (phew!). However, remember to remove the battery before putting them in the washing machine. Also, like any outdoor clothing, read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to avoid damaging them.
