Road bikes
Because life is better in the mountains, we encourage you to play outdoors year-round! That’s why we offer a selection of men’s and women’s endurance and race road bikes, featuring trusted brands, such as Specialized, Devinci, and Scott. Road bikes are perfect for enjoying epic rides, pure speed, and magnificent scenery.
As the name suggests, road bikes are built for speed and efficiency on paved surfaces. Their lightweight frames and low riding position improve aerodynamics and increase pedalling power. This makes them excellent bikes for riding long distances, getting a workout, or tackling personal challenges. Large-diameter wheels (typically 700c) and narrow, smooth tires with low rolling resistance help you maintain speed on asphalt. The curved handlebars offer multiple hand positions to keep you comfortable, even on longer rides. On climbs, you can sit upright by holding the brake hoods or the tops of the bars; on descents, the drop bars provide better control and a more aerodynamic posture.
Today, there are several types of road bikes designed to suit different needs. Choose the right one based on your goals, experience level, and the kind of rides you enjoy. Here are the two main types of road bikes:
Most road bike frames are made of either aluminum or carbon. Aluminum is more affordable and offers excellent stiffness for the price. Carbon is a bit lighter and absorbs vibrations better. Many models combine the two, pairing an aluminum frame with a carbon fork.
Today, most road bikes come with disc brakes, which offer better stopping power, especially in wet conditions. Higher-end models use hydraulic disc brakes, which are known for their strength and precision. They provide smoother braking modulation but require a bit more maintenance. Mechanical disc brakes, on the other hand, are simpler to maintain and more affordable, though they offer less power and modulation.
Brands offer sizing guides based on body measurements. They’re a helpful starting point, but nothing beats a test ride to see how different bikes feel. Drop by one of our stores in Laval or Brossard, and our experts will help you find the right size and model.
Many road bikes are sold without pedals. Beginners often go with flat pedals, while more experienced riders choose clipless pedals for better power transfer. Mountain bikers can install SPD pedals on their road bikes to use the same shoes for both bikes. To learn more about road biking, check out our road bike buyer’s guide.
In Quebec, wearing a helmet is mandatory. And for your comfort in the saddle, a good pair of cycling shorts with a quality chamois is essential. A breathable, moisture-wicking jersey can also make a big difference in how you feel on the road. We offer a wide selection of road bike apparel, both in-store and online.

Must-have accessories for road cyclists include sunglasses, water bottles and cages, cycling gloves, a saddlebag, and a multi-tool. In case of a flat, you should also carry tire levers, a spare tube, and a mini pump. Many other accessories can make your rides more enjoyable, such as hydration packs, bike computers, and lights. At Oberson, we have all the road bike accessories you need.
Staying on top of basic maintenance helps extend the life of your road bike and lets you ride with confidence. Check your tire pressure regularly, keep the chain clean and well lubricated, and make sure the brakes are working properly. Quebec and Canada abound in breathtaking road bike routes. The Route verte website is an outstanding resource. This 5,000+ km cycling network spans the province, linking up a mix of protected bike paths, quiet secondary roads, urban bike lanes, and repurposed rail trails. Some sections are shared with other non-motorized users, such as inline skaters and runners.
Little-traveled country roads also often provide the perfect setting for fast riding and scenic views. Many cities offer well-designed, safe bike lanes for urban cyclists.
