How to choose the right bike?
The best bike is the one that fits where and how you want to ride.
Road Bikes
Road bikes have drop bars, slick tires, and large 700c wheels. These lightweight bicycles are designed to ride paved roads with maximum speed and efficiency.
Race Bikes
Race bikes are built for speed. They feature a lower front end for an aerodynamic riding position and a stiff frame for maximum power transfer and responsiveness. They’re best for competitive riders and anyone focused on performance.
Endurance Bikes
Endurance bikes (aka sportive and gran fondo bikes), as the name suggests, are designed for long hours and many kilometres in the saddle. A geometry that allows for a more upright riding position and more flexible frames that dampen vibrations make epic rides more comfortable. The gearing is also lower to keep your legs fresher over long distances.
Gravel Bikes
A gravel bike is like a road bike that’s ready to get a little dirty. With a burlier construction, wider tires and a geometry focused on keeping you comfortable on bumpy roads, it opens the door to routes that go beyond the pavement. Plus, their lower gearing makes tackling steeper off-road grades easier. They’re made for all-day adventures linking up country lanes, forest roads, bike paths, and even some trails. Most run 700c wheels for speed and efficiency on higher-quality forest roads. Many are also compatible with 650b wheels that can accommodate bigger tires for better traction and bump absorption on rougher roads and paths. Many gravel bikes can be fitted with panniers and bags for long outings and bikepacking.
Mountain Bikes
Mountain bikes are for those who want to head into woodsy, mountainous terrain. They’re designed to handle rough, rocky double- and singletrack trails.
Cross-Country Mountain Bikes
Cross-country mountain bikes can be hardtail or dual suspension bicycles with under 120 mm of travel. Their light weight and upright riding position make them the fastest climbers. They’re best for racers or those who want to get some cardio and have fun without riding the most difficult technical trails.
Trail Mountain Bikes
Trail bikes are a versatile, all-around category. They’re best for riders who enjoy endorphins on climbs as much as adrenaline on downhills. These bikes are relatively lightweight for efficient uphills but have a slacker geometry and more travel (dual suspension of up to 150 mm) for attacking technical descents.
Enduro Mountain Bikes
If your main motivation to ride is the thrill of bombing downhill, then an enduro bike is the best choice. They still climb efficiently, though not as quickly as their lighter brethren. But with a slack geometry, wide wheelbase, big tires, and generous travel (140 mm to 180 mm), descents are where they shine. All those characteristics also make them the best bikes for jumps, slabs, and drops.
Hybrid Bikes
Hybrid bikes live up to their name by bringing together the best of both worlds. Combining characteristics of road and mountain bikes, they’re the ultimate city cruisers. With flat handlebars, relatively wide tires, and a more upright position, they excel at commuting, running errands, riding for fitness, and exploring bike paths. Most models are compatible with racks, bags, and fenders. Many hybrids come with 700c wheels for rolling efficiency and simple gearing for ease of use. Some models offer suspension in their forks to smooth out potholes, gravel, and curbs. Hybrid bikes are a smart, versatile choice for everyday riding.
Electric Bikes
E-bikes amplify your pedalling power with a motor and rechargeable battery, letting you ride farther and faster with less exertion. Oberson carries electric mountain bikes (including cross-country, trail and enduro bikes), gravel bikes, and hybrid bikes.
They’re ideal for riders who want to cover more ground in less time, keep up on a fast group ride, or get back into cycling after an injury or despite some physical challenges. Commuters love the speed boost, especially on longer routes or hilly terrain. Mountain bikers can squeeze in more descents without tiring out on the climbs. E-gravel bikers can extend their explorations. Whichever type of e-bike you ride, you can always get a solid workout because the motor only responds to your own effort.
Kids’ Bikes
Riding a bike gives kids a fun way to be active, build confidence, and spend more time outdoors. Oberson offers a full range of hybrid and mountain bikes for children ages 2 and up. These high-quality bicycles have kid-sized frames, wheels, and cockpits that enable your little ones to comfortably hone their skills. They’re perfect for zipping around the neighbourhood and tagging along with you on the bike path or forest trails.
