What’s the difference between road and mountain bike shorts?
You can wear most bike shorts for both road and mountain biking. However, some models are called liner shorts because you usually wear them under looser fitting mountain bike shorts (aka baggies). Given their specific fit and thinner fabric, they don’t work as well on their own for road biking.
Road bike shorts are designed to be worn alone without other shorts over them. They’re more durable and less see-through and provide compression, which makes them extremely comfortable over long distances. They also give you some protection during crashes. Road bike shorts also have some practical features, such as pockets on the sides or reflective details.
Bike Shorts vs. Bib Shorts
It’s all a matter of comfort and taste. Bib shorts (bike shorts with suspenders) are very comfortable over long distances. The higher fit at the belly hugs the body and holds everything in place, reducing the risk of irritation.
However, many bike shorts have a wider waist band than bib shorts, which some riders find more comfortable. Try on a few and feel the differences between them. You’ll definitely figure out which type you prefer.
Chamois Pads on Bike Shorts
A chamois is the most important part of bike shorts. It’s the padded part that’s glued or sewn to the crotch. Its purpose is simple: to give you maximum comfort during your rides by absorbing vibrations.

Gel or Foam Chamois
Foam is often used in the design, but some companies offer bike shorts with gel. One is not more effective than the other; it’s a matter of preference when you try them on.
Differences Between Men’s and Women’s Bike Shorts
Bike shorts have different fits for men and women due to their specific morphologies. Some models may look similar, but it’s mainly the shape of the chamois that differentiates them. Men’s chamois pads are longer at the front, and those designed for women are wider over the sit bones.
Do you wear underwear under bike shorts?
You should wear bike shorts without underwear. Wearing underwear creates friction, which can quickly lead to irritation.
Maintaining Bike Shorts
Like all sportswear, it’s essential to maintain them well. Special soaps for technical clothing are available on the market, such as Granger's Active Wash, which is highly effective because it doesn’t leave soap residue.
You can also use a mild soap without fabric softener or whitener and wash them in cold water on a delicate cycle. Never tumble dry your bike shorts because that will damage the chamois pad’s fibres. Always look at the labels on your clothes before washing them to make sure you care for them properly.
