Founded and based in Quebec, Velec designs electric bikes that are accessible, comfortable, and tailored to cyclists’ real-world needs. Every detail—from frame geometry to battery range—reflects a clear goal: to make daily travel easier and provide a sustainable option that’s fun to ride, no matter your level or age. At Oberson, we offer a selection of Velec electric bikes and accessories, online and at our stores in Laval and Brossard.
Founded in 2005 by Michel Leblanc, Velec was born of a simple idea: to create a green product that could improve the lives of the province’s aging population. He began by importing bicycles from Asia for tests in Quebec, collecting feedback from friends, family, and early customers. Each comment helped the nascent company adjust, improve, and rethink its products. This patient, customer-oriented approach remains woven into the company’s DNA. Today, the brand is found in bike shops across Canada and has over 100,000 users.
Velec has continually improved its batteries, a key component for electric bikes. In 2007, the brand became the first e-bike manufacturer to use lithium batteries, which weighed 25 pounds less. In 2010, Velec was the first to offer the option of adding a second battery to increase range. Over the years, they’ve continued to improve their bikes’ power system, moving on from 20 ah batteries to 48 V/10 Ah models for more power and longer rides.
Velec is closely attuned to their customers, and their products evolve based on cyclists’ needs. Designed to make cycling more accessible, their models set themselves apart for their thoughtful ergonomics. The upright riding position is easier on the back and shoulders. Low-step frames (frames with a low top tube) make it easier to get on and off the bike, a significant advantage for shorter cyclists or those with reduced mobility. Moreover, the motor’s gentle, progressive acceleration makes for smooth, confident riding. Many models also include a thumb throttle alongside the pedal assist, which gives you an extra boost when you need it. With the thumb throttle, the French expression coup de pouce—a “boost,” literally “a thumb push”—is totally on point. In short, everything is designed so that riding is fun, whatever the rider’s age or level.
Velec is seeking to be “the most Quebecois electric bike company” by doubling down on its local roots. Its head office, located in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, opened in 2021. It houses a growing team and efficient, state-of-the-art facilities. For the frame design, the company partnered with Faction Bike, a Quebec engineering firm. It’s also actively exploring ways to build batteries and, in the long term, as many components as possible in the province. This project aims to create long-term jobs, shrink the brand’s ecological footprint, and design products that meet the real needs and preferences of North American cyclists.
