How to Choose a Bike Helmet

To choose a bike helmet, start by identifying your riding style: road or mountain biking. Road helmets prioritize lightweight materials, ventilation, and aerodynamic designs. Mountain bike helmets offer more extensive coverage and a sturdier construction. Pay close attention to fit: it’s the most important factor for safety and comfort. Also make sure the helmet meets current safety
certifications and, if desired, includes technologies such as MIPS for added protection.

STEP 01

Which bike helmet should you choose based on your riding style (road or mountain)?

To choose the right bike helmet, start by figuring out your riding style. Helmets generally fall into two main categories: road and mountain. Cyclists on road, gravel, and hybrid bikes typically go with road helmets. Riders who enjoy hitting the trails prefer mountain bike helmets that offer more extensive head coverage.

Understanding the different types of helmets

Road Bike Helmets

For road riding, choose a helmet that’s lightweight, well ventilated, and comfortable. These models are designed for long rides on pavement, where heat management plays an important role. Their many vents promote airflow, helping you stay cool even when you’re pedalling hard.

Some road helmets have designs that prioritize aerodynamics. Usually featuring fewer vents and more compact, they reduce wind resistance and optimize performance at high speeds.

Road bike helmets also work well for urban riders on hybrid bikes and gravel bikers looking for a lightweight, comfortable option.

Mountain Bike Helmets

For mountain biking, go with a helmet that offers more coverage and a sturdier construction. These models provide more protection at the back and sides of the head, which is especially useful on technical trails, where the risk of crashing is higher.
Some mountain bike helmets offer even more protection with a built-in or removable chin bar. These helmets are well suited to trail, enduro, or downhill riders, who are more at risk for bigger crashes.

Most mountain bike helmets feature a visor that helps protect against the sun, branches, and debris. More protective models often have a larger or adjustable visor for added coverage.

Other Types of Bike Helmets

BMX helmets, recognizable by their rounded shape and rugged construction, provide increased protection for park and track riding.
Children’s helmets are designed to provide a secure, comfortable fit tailored to younger riders’ head shapes.

Some helmets designed for urban commuting emphasize comfort and simplicity, with
more extensive coverage and generally less ventilation, which often works best for everyday use.

STEP 02

What size and fit should you choose?

To choose the right helmet size, measure your head circumference to ensure you get a precise fit. A helmet that fits properly is essential for effective protection and all-day comfort.

Helmet size is determined by head circumference. Use a flexible measuring tape and wrap it around the widest part of your head, about 2 cm above the eyebrows. If you don’t have one, you can use a piece of string and then measure it with a ruler. Once the helmet is on, it should sit level on your head, covering the forehead and the back of the head, and remain in place when you move your head. The straps should form a Y just below the ears, and the buckle should be snug under the chin without being too tight. You should be able to fit one finger between the strap and your chin.

Each brand uses a different shell shape, so they often fit differently. You should try on multiple models when possible. Some helmets are also available in different widths to better match your head shape.

ADVICE

Checklist for a proper fit:

The helmet sits level and covers the forehead

It stays in place when you move your head

The straps form a Y just below the ears

You can slip your finger underneath the strap below your chin

STEP 03

Which safety technologies should you choose?

All helmets sold in Canada must meet strict safety standards, such as CSA, CPSC, Snell, or ASTM certifications. Regardless of the helmet’s price, these certifications ensure a reliable level of protection in the event of an impact.

Some models incorporate advanced protection technologies designed to improve safety in specific situations. For example, Mips® (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) aims to reduce rotational forces on the head during certain side impacts. Other systems, developed by various brands, are based on similar principles.

High-end helmets often set themselves apart with such technologies, along with a more precise fit and lighter materials. That said, a properly fitted, certified helmet is the most important factor in effective protection.

FAQ — How to Choose a Bike Helmet

Answers to common questions about choosing a bike helmet.

Why wear a bike helmet?

A helmet is essential for protecting your head in the event of a crash. Modern models provide effective impact protection and are lightweight, comfortable, and well ventilated.

In Canada, helmet use is mandatory for all cyclists in some provinces, including British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Ontario. It’s also required for e-bike riders in several provinces, including Quebec and Ontario, and mandatory for minors in other provinces, such as Manitoba and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Which helmet should you choose for gravel riding?

For gravel riding, most cyclists go with a road bike helmet because of its light weight and ventilation. However, if you ride on rougher forest roads, a mountain bike helmet can offer extra protection thanks to its more extensive head coverage. The choice ultimately depends on the type of terrain you ride most often.

When should you replace a bike helmet?

You should replace a bike helmet every 3 to 5 years, even without an impact, because materials can degrade over time due to UV exposure and heat. After a crash or significant impact, you should replace your helmet even if no damage is visible: the inner foam may have lost its ability to absorb impacts. Signs of wear, such as cracks, worn straps, or a defective adjustment system, also indicate it’s time for a replacement.

What is Mips technology?

Mips® (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is designed to reduce rotational forces on the head during side impacts. It’s now widely used by many brands and provides an extra level of protection alongside standard safety certifications.

Are more expensive bike helmets safer?

All bike helmets sold in Canada must meet the same safety standards, so even entry-level models provide reliable impact protection. More expensive helmets typically offer better ventilation, a lighter weight, improved fit systems, and safety features like Mips®.

Can you reuse a helmet after a crash?

No. After a significant impact, a helmet should be replaced, even if it appears undamaged. The inner foam may have been compromised and may no longer provide adequate protection.
