What Is an Everesting Challenge?

Social commitment and action are at the heart of our values at Oberson. For us, the way we raise money should also reflect who we are. That’s why the Everesting challenge came to mind. A look at this (sizeable!) cycling challenge.

What is an Everesting challenge?

Originating in Australia, an Everesting is a cycling challenge with a simple concept: ascend an out-and-back climb until you rack up 8,848 metres of elevation gain—as much as the elevation of Everest’s summit. Simple? Yes. Tough? You bet!

Usually, this challenge is completed solo. However, for some events, such as Oberson’s Everesting, teams can accumulate the metres to make it more accessible and inclusive.

Here is a fun fact: the challenge was inspired by George Mallory—the eponymous British mountaineer’s grandson—who cycled Mount Donna Buang eight times in 1994 to train for his ascent of Everest.

Why hold a fundraiser for the Montreal Children’s Hospital?

For us, it’s essential to be involved in our community through concrete actions and partnerships. The Montreal Children’s Hospital is home to the first and only clinic in Quebec for primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), a disease that affects our young, energetic ambassador Frédérique Tremblay Oberson.

This department at the Montreal Children’s Hospital has a special place in our hearts because it’s where Frédérique’s treatments and follow-ups occur. And as the hospital’s slogan says, “We prefer our kids to be spirited, even a little bratty—anything but sick.”

How to take part in Oberson’s Everesting?

There are three ways to contribute to our Everesting goal. The first is to make an online donation in the amount of your choice. Our goal, apart from reaching our Everest summit? Raise a $35,000 donation to the Montreal Children’s Hospital.

The second is to buy our Everesting challenge jersey, which will soon be on sale on our website. All sales will be donated to the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation.

The third is brand-new for this second edition. So more cyclists can take part in the fundraiser, a group road ride will take place on August 3 in the Laurentians. Tickets cost $40 and include the guided outing along with lunch and refreshments at the post-ride get-together.

Where will Oberson’s Everesting challenge take place?

The climbs to our Everest summit will begin on Sunday, August 25, on Camillien-Houde Way in Montreal. The event will take place between 7:00 a.m. and noon and will allow many cyclists to complete one or more climbs of this island classic.

How will the funds raised be used?

Funds raised through the Everesting challenge will be used for research at the Montreal Children’s Hospital’s primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) and cystic fibrosis clinic.

Making a difference in our community is in our DNA. Although children make up 25 percent of the population, only 10 percent of research is devoted to them. Every donation goes a long way. It attracts an additional seven to ten dollars in public funding to help families whose last hope lies in research.

Come cheer on our team at the Everesting challenge on August 25 from 8:00 a.m. to noon on Camillien-Houde Way in Montreal.
