Because the toe pieces with a default value guarantee a medium retention which therefore works best when the heel unit is also set to medium release values. What happens when you move away from these median values? At low settings the toe will provide most of the hold, while at high settings the heel does most of the work. But now, thanks to this new ATK technology, the front and rear of the binding collaborate equally in managing the releases.
