Protecting our winters with POW

Founded fifteen years ago, the not-for-profit organization Protect Our Winters Canada (POW) works with athletes like Caroline Côté to raise awareness about the risks of climate change. This new collaboration with Oberson will send a strong message: how can we preserve natural environments?

Often seen as a far-off problem, climate change is already affecting Quebec’s winters. Ambassador Caroline Côté’s main mission during her travels is to inform people about preserving nature. Inspired by her dedication, the new alliance with POW Canada aims to share this mission and reach a broader audience.

More Than Just an Ambassador

Always pushing her personal limits, Côté is an inspiration to many people. The professional filmmaker wants to convey a message about the Nordic world in her documentaries. Armed with her camera and a thirst for adventure, she travels Arctic peninsulas to bring back images that educate us about the risks of climate change.

Whether on her cross-country skis, downhill skis or snowshoes, she wants to inspire the public to act and protect the longevity of Quebec’s winters. Always underscoring environmental issues, Caroline Côté is a role model whose mission spurs us to act.

An Organization That Packs a Punch: POW

Renowned snowboarder Jeremy Jones noticed that his favourite ski resorts were closing earlier in the season due to less snow accumulation. For Jones, protecting the places and experiences we love from climate change was a given; that’s why he founded POW: the first major sports organization dedicated to raising awareness about the risks of climate change. Aiming to bring together and inform the community, the founder conveys a sincere, passionate message with the goal of influencing environmental policies.

Whether through renewable energy development projects or carbon taxes, POW seeks to influence tomorrow’s policies. He says, “Right now, we have the luxury of worrying about how climate change might impact the outdoor industry. [. . .] But if we sit on our hands [. . .], we won’t be worried about powder days [. . .]. We’ll be worried about the stability of our environment.” With such a strong message, it’s easy to join the cause to protect our winters.

A Growing Family

As Côté points out, “If we keep up our current lifestyle, we could experience 15% shorter winters in Quebec by 2050—that’s 20 fewer days.” With the zest for life and well-being that the mountains bestow upon us, it goes without saying that creating a partnership with POW Canada and Caroline Côté is a natural choice.

As part of the large POW Canada family, Oberson wants to play a key role by showcasing Caroline’s stories and displaying the POW colours in our stores to raise awareness about this cause that affects everyone. Moreover, the new POW Canada collection will be available in Oberson stores this fall. Oberson is committed to donating profits from the sale of products with the POW logo to support defending the environment.

As the season comes to a close, many of you are already imagining next winter’s powder lines. But we are facing a major challenge that requires everyone’s participation. With this new, dedicated trio, it’s a safe bet that there will be a positive impact on the environment.

Stay tuned for our upcoming campaigns in collaboration with POW Canada.
