Whistler is a small town north of Vancouver, British Columbia, and home to Whistler Blackcomb, which boasts some of the largest skiable terrain in North America and has been repeatedly voted the best ski vacation destination. Nestled in the heart of the breathtaking Coast Mountains, Whistler naturally wins over visitors with outstanding skiing for everyone and unmatched snow conditions. Its practical accessibility, top-notch infrastructure, and welcoming atmosphere all help ensure that everyone creates cherished memories.
Whistler Blackcomb’s Legendary Skiing
Previously two different entities, the Whistler and Blackcomb resorts merged to form the current ski area, now called Whistler Blackcomb. With a vast playground of over 8,100 acres, the resort has more than 200 runs, 37 lifts, 16 bowls, and 3 glaciers. It also wins the silver medal in North America for the highest vertical drop with its 1,609 metres.
One of Whistler Blackcomb’s best aspects is that all skiers can find what they’re looking for and soak up its magic. For a successful ski trip, it’s important to have the right gear for your skill level and the snow conditions.
Offering gentle trails for beginners and thrilling descents for experts, the mountain is designed for everyone to get the most out of each day. The runs are evenly divvied up among all skill levels, with 20% of the runs designed for beginners, 35% for intermediates, 25% for advanced skiers, and 20% for experts. Whistler Blackcomb is a true haven for skiers, whatever their level.
Many must-ski runs feature panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and their snow-capped peaks. Beginners absolutely must ski Matthew’s Traverse, Pika’s Traverse, Sunset Boulevard, and 7th Avenue. Intermediate skiers love descending Harmony Ridge, Upper Peak to Creek, Blackcomb Glacier, and Cloud Nine while taking in the scenery. Advanced and expert skiers will enjoy Horseshoe 5, Frog Hollow, West Cirque, Couloir, and Heavenly Basin. Those who prefer glades’ picturesque winter landscapes, with their snow-draped branches, can gracefully weave their way through the trees of Christmas Trees, Glissando Glades, and Chunky’s Choice. For the ultimate challenge in terms of vertical drop, technical skills, and required courage, we particularly recommend Roby Bowl, Pakalolo, and Sapphire Bowl.
Some rituals in Whistler never change. Pro skiers take advantage of beautiful snowy days to put on an unrivalled spectacle for the resort’s skiers. From Peak Chair, watch daredevils launch themselves into the air without hesitation and showcase stupendous tricks off the steep Air Jordan cliff. Let yourself get carried away by the chorus of shouts and pole taps that ring out from the lift line and chairlift. Don’t be surprised if, later on, one of these pros flies over your head in a nimble leap over Crystal Road Gap. You’ll be treated to a show unlike any you’ve ever seen.
Some people in search of fresh snow like to include a day or two of alpine touring in their stay at Whistler. There are many possibilities for exploration. However, be aware that, due to avalanche hazards, all skiers venturing into the backcountry should have avalanche training and the necessary safety equipment in case of an incident.

In the Whistler Village, the vibrant energy and euphoric atmosphere are palpable. For a more casual, convivial outing, we recommend visiting Peaked Pies, Pasta Lupino and Sushi Village. For those looking for a lively atmosphere, restaurants and bars such as Garibaldi Lift Company, The Longhorn Saloon, Dubh Linn Gate Irish Pub, Merlin’s and El Furniture Warehouse are outstanding après-ski venues. But if you’re looking for a unique culinary experience, you can choose Bar Oso, Bearfoot Bistro, Wild Blue, Sidecut Steakhouse, The Grill Room, Araxi, or Alta Bistro. One thing’s for sure, there are plenty of options in Whistler Village, whatever the makeup of your group, the desired atmosphere, or the type of cuisine you’re looking for.
The atmosphere is more laid-back in Creekside, and it’s less busy compared to its neighbour Whistler Village. Many people go to Creekside to get away from the crowds in a quiet ambiance after a long day on the slopes. For family-friendly dining out, Creekbread, Southside Dinner, and Samurai Sushi are outstanding options. For après-ski, Dusty’s BBQ or Cure Lounge & Patio are well worth a stop. If you’re looking to take your taste buds on a journey and treat yourself to an extraordinary dining experience, consider visiting the Rimrock Cafe or Red Door Bistro.
Off-Slope Activities in Whistler
The Whistler experience goes well beyond ski runs. Even off the slopes, the village abounds in activities, both for families and for adults travelling as a couple or with friends.
Families will love the various activities offered by Ziptrek Ecotours, Vallea Lumina, and Escape! Whistler. You can also go skating at the Olympic Plaza or have fun in the Magic Castle and Tree Fort.
Visiting Whistler without taking the world’s longest gondola is almost unthinkable. The Peak 2 Peak experience offers you a 360-degree view over Whistler Village, mountain peaks, lakes, glaciers, and forests. Hop on the glass floor gondola for a bird’s-eye view, and enjoy a drink at the Umbrella Bar, located at the top of Whistler Mountain.
Whistler has also earned great renown because of its outstanding offering of activities. One of these is the Whistler Tasting Tours gourmet experience, which allows you to visit various restaurants, depending on the chosen option, for an extraordinary exploration of the village’s eclectic culinary scene. The Blackcomb Helicopters company offers the unique opportunity fly over the mountains in a helicopter while enjoying landscapes that change with the seasons. After a long day spent in the winter cold, let yourself be swept away by relaxing serenity in one of the surrounding spas. Scandinave Spa, The Spa, and Westin Resort & Spa all offer an exceptional wellness experience.
