Bike jerseys aren’t just about looking like your favourite Tour de France rider or being stylish at the post-ride tailgate. They’re designed to enhance riders’ comfort, safety, and convenience. Here’s an overview of the common features that give them many advantages over a conventional long- or short-sleeved shirt.
Breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics
Most cycling jerseys are made from polyester, lycra, or merino wool. These materials wick moisture away from your skin to help keep your body temperature stable. In warm weather, this helps you stay cool. In cold weather, the removal of moisture from your skin prevents you from being chilled. A cotton T-shirt, on the other hand, sops up sweat, resulting in a clammy, less comfortable outing. In extreme cases, a wet shirt can lead to hypothermia.
Almost all cycling jerseys are relatively close fitting for better aerodynamics. The lower wind resistance lets you ride faster. Beyond speed, a closer fit avoids the irritation and potential distraction of fabric flapping in the wind.
Bike jerseys, even loose ones in the style of a regular T-shirt, have a cycling-specific fit. Because they’re designed to be worn in a forward-leaning riding position, they have wider shoulders and sleeves that won’t tug against your skin or cause chaffing. They also have a longer back (aka drop-tail) that will keep you covered so your lower back stays out of the breeze. Many have silicon grippers on the waist and sleeves to hold the jersey in place. These comfort enhancements also improve safety because you won’t be adjusting your top as you’re speeding down the road or trail.
Many bike jerseys have flashy colours. It’s about more than just panache and style. The bright hues make riders more visible and therefore safer from traffic. Reflective details, especially for those who ride in low-light conditions, are another major visibility-enhancing safety feature.
Most jerseys include several pockets on the lower back. They let you store crucial items within easy reach. They often have room for gels, tools, phone, wallet, among other things. Some jerseys have enough pockets to take everything you need for a short ride without adding the extra weight and bulk of a saddle bag or backpack.
Bike jerseys can have up to 50+ UV protection. This prevents your back from being burned through your shirts on long, sunny rides.
You should choose your cycling jerseys based on your type of riding and personal preferences.
Relaxed fit
Mountain bike jerseys usually have a relaxed fit because the discipline’s lower speeds make wind resistance less significant. This fit preference also has something to do with the sport’s more casual culture. Looser jerseys could also be a good choice for people who enjoy cruising around town on a hybrid bike.
Pro/race/aero fit
These skin-tight, high-end jerseys are for road bikers or perhaps competitive cross-country and gravel riders focused on performance. They minimize wind resistance when every second counts. They’re best for racers, people who want to crush their friends on Strava, or those involved in intensive training.
Athletic fit
An athletic fit is the happy medium between the previous two fits. These jerseys are close-fitting yet still loose enough to be comfortable, even when standing or in an upright posture. They’re the best choice for recreational outings or coffee rides.
No matter what fit you prefer, remember that cycling jerseys are designed for to be worn when you’re in a riding position, not for standing upright. To find the right fit, try them on while leaning forward (or even while sitting on a bike, if possible), which is the best way to gauge how it will feel on the road or trail.
For warm weather, go with a lightweight, short-sleeved jersey. Long zippers down the front can also be a big help in cooling down on hot days. Water-repellant jerseys or those with water-resistant pockets are a good choice for rainy outings. In cool weather, you can add arm warmers to a short-sleeved jersey or put on a long-sleeved one.
Whatever the fabric, mountain bike jerseys tend to have a more rugged design to withstand branches and brambles.
Lycra or polyester
These stretchy, breathable materials are used for most bike jerseys.
Merino wool
Merino wool has many of the same qualities as synthetic materials with the added benefits of a more natural feel and anti-odour properties. Some jerseys have a blend of merino wool and synthetic fabrics for the best of both worlds.
Recycled materials
Some jerseys are made from recycled materials. They’re an excellent choice for environmentally conscious cyclists.
Most jerseys should be washed in cold water on a gentle cycle and then hung to dry.
