Inline skating took off in the 1990s, and its popularity is still growing. At K2, innovation and comfort are at the heart of the skating experience. Knowing the different parts of an inline skate can help you find the best fit for your skating style and skill level. Here are the main components to consider:
Wheels greatly influence the skate’s performance and how it feels when gliding.
Small wheels are ideal for beginners, kids, or anyone who enjoys playing hockey or doing tricks. They accelerate quickly, offer excellent agility, and keep your centre of gravity lower, which makes them more stable. That said, they require more effort to maintain speed and are less suited to long distances.
Big wheels, on the other hand, are perfect for long outings or workout sessions. They make it easier to reach and maintain high speeds with less effort. However, they’re heavier and raise the centre of gravity, which puts more pressure on your ankles. This makes them better suited to experienced skaters.
How to choose wheel diameter?
Frame design affects energy transfer. Now almost exclusively made of aluminum, it plays a key role in transferring energy from your body to the wheels.
Extruded frames are mainly used on speed-oriented models. They are highly responsive. Pressed frames are more flexible and forgiving, making them perfect for beginner or intermediate skaters. They provide comfort and manoeuvrability.
The boot’s structure directly impacts the skate’s stiffness and support. A rigid shell provides excellent support and boosts performance, while a softer one is more forgiving for greater comfort and flexibility.
There are three heights, each influencing performance and energy transfer. Low boots are better for experienced skaters focused on performance. Mid-height boots offer a lot of versatility, and high boots provide maximum support, which makes them great for beginners.
Introduced by K2 in 1993, SoftBoot® technology revolutionized the industry by combining comfort and performance in a flexible boot. This innovative design offers more breathability, a lightweight feel, and a natural fit while still providing excellent support.
Available on certain models, the BOA® adjustment system allows for a quick, precise, even fit with the turn of a dial. This convenient system improves performance and makes it easier to put on and take off your skates.
To lengthen your skates’ lifespan and maintain optimal performance, Oberson offers a variety of K2 replacement parts, including wheels and bearings.
Inline skating requires a bit of caution. Stay alert and watch out for cracks and uneven pavement, slippery surfaces, and loose gravel or stones that could lead to crashes and injuries. Wearing a helmet is strongly recommended to prevent being injured in a fall. Protective gear, such as wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads will also help keep you safe. Some sets include all the essentials for a worry-free outing. Many pieces of protective equipment feature elastic straps for a quick, easy, secure fit.
